Polypharmacy is a common medication management challenge in the older adult population. This geriatric population, usually considered to be ages 65 and older, has more chronic and acute medical conditions, which means more medications taken to treat them. Polypharmacy poses a significant threat to the quality of life and wellness for older adults. The use of multiple prescription drugs within this population has far-reaching consequences, as unintended contraindications can compromise older adults’ health. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to the negative outcomes associated with polypharmacy because both increasing age and number of medications received are positively correlated with the risk of adverse events. 3 However, the use of multiple medications may be clinically appropriate and necessary in patients with multiple chronic conditions.
